Introducing Laser* Tag Badge from dani.pink, a brand new**, unofficial badge for DEF CON 33! 

*no actual lasers, just invisible somewhat-focused IR beam 
**other people have done similar things before, but this is a bit different because it has an LCD and a convoluted QR code online scoring system!

Game

  • Wear badge during Defcon.
  • Earn points by firing at other people you encounter wearing the badge.
  • Score more points for tagging more unique other people each hour (you can tag the same person up to 5 times per hour)
  • Periodically scan QR code on badge screen to sync to online leaderboard.
  • At-home mode allows for use after the convention, with simpler scoring and no QR code sync.

Hardware

  • RP2350 (on Waveshare RP2350-Zero daughterboard)
  • VSLY5940 narrow-beam IR emitter + generic IR receiver
  • 30 RGB LEDs
  • Photoresistor for automatic LED brightness control
  • 1.28" round LCD (240x240) with GC9A01 driver (removable/reusable)
  • 5-way directional switch + separate SYNC button
  • Rechargeable 18650 battery
  • Vibration motor
  • Piezo buzzer
  • 2x SAO ports (power-only, unless you manually solder new wires)
  • Depending on how soon you pick up the badge, you might end up with a slightly-worse-looking GREEN PCB and/or BLUE display module (supply chain and production times and all that stuff)

Caveats

Not as good as real laser tag because:

  • Badge has no visible laser dot to help with aim
  • IR beam is not as narrow as real laser tag (to make up for lack of visible laser dot)
  • Scores aren't synced to leaderboard in real-time--each player needs to press a button on the badge to generate a QR code and then scan it to upload their record of hits to server
  • LVCC is not as good as a real laser tag arena due to: 1) ambient light, 2) reflective surfaces. The increased ambient light makes the maximum overall shot range less (especially around sunlight), and the reflective surfaces make it so shots at short range may "hit" even if the aim is bad.

 

This is an order to Pick Up a badge in-person in Las Vegas!

Pickup options:

1. Wednesday at 4:50-5:05pm (start of linecon) next to the very large Siegel's Bagelmania sign, which is a 4 minute walk from the closest LVCC West Hall door and a 3 minute walk from the LVCC Loop West Station.
2. Wednesday at 8:00-10:00pm at the Reddit Meetup at 3535 Cocktail Bar inside the LINQ.. The Reddit Meetup itself starts at 7pm, so definitely feel free to go earlier and hang out! We won't get there until about 8pm though.
3. Thursday at 7:30-7:45am (right before human registration opens), again at the Siegel's Bagelmania sign.
4. Thursday at 7:00-8:00pm at the second Reddit Meetup, again at 3535 Cocktail Bar inside the LINQ.
5. Friday at 2:00-2:30pm at the Badgelife Community (LVCC - L1 - Exhibit Hall West 4 - C204)
6. Saturday at 10:30 - 11:00 am at the Badgelife Community (LVCC - L1 - Exhibit Hall West 4 - C204)

NOTE FOR PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE US:

If you get an error saying "No stores available with your item", press "Change location" and set your pickup location to Nevada, US and you should see "DEF CON Pickup" as an option. You can still use your billing address from outside the US.
